MISTAKES

“All men make mistakes, but married men find out about them sooner.” – Red Skelton

FOOL

A pastor once received a note after a sermon. The note had just one word, “fool.” The pastor held the note up before his congregation and said, “I’ve received many notes that someone forgot to sign, but here’s a note where someone forgot to write a message and signed it.

We need criticism

MLK: “One of the sure signs of maturity is the ability to rise to the point of self-criticism.”

Feedback is essential to good leadership, but it only works if the leader is ready and willing to listen and consider change.

Criticism may be a sign that you’re doing something wrong.

Or Right. Criticism is what happens to Do-ers. It comes with leadership. Action.

Oldline liberal contempt for Billy Graham reminds me of an old (apocryphal?) incident attributed to D.L. Moody. It seems a group of local oldline ministers met with Moody before a crusade. They bombarded him with everything that is wrong about mass crusade evangelism. He listened and said, “I agree with everything you’ve said. But I still like my way of doing evangelism better than your way of not doing it.”

“In order to avoid criticism, never do anything. Ever.”

“For every action there is an equal and opposite criticism.”

“The only thing that rises above scrutiny is mediocrity.” OW Holmes
